SEO is a process used to gain the best possible volume or quality of traffic from search engines. Research has shown that only 14% of the clicks on a Search Engine Result Page (SERP) are given to paid advertisements. The majority of the clicks go to the ads directly under the Paid Ads. If your website is not on the first page near the top, you are not likely to get that click.

Let's look at some specifics about Search Engine Results Pages
In the image below I have taken a sample SERP and labeled 3 areas. The Local Ads appear because I have specified a city in my search. If you have a FREE local business account with Google® then the ad your ad will appear in this area. The Right Hand column has paid ads from AdWords®. The positioning is based on a Bid Amount, the higher the bid the higher the placement. The last labeled area is for "Organic" or "Natural" ads. These come from information the Search Engine finds on each website. Statistics show that people are far more likely to click on an Organic ad over a paid ad. This is why it is so important to optimize your pages to get placed at or near the top.

What's in an Ad?
This second screen shows that Sponsored or Paid ads can also show up on the left side at the top.
Now let's look at what is used to build the organic ads. The first line that makes up the link comes from the Page Title. Many people make the common mistake of using page titles like "Home Page" or use their site/company name. A more descriptive Page Title like the one below provides more information to the searcher and is far more likely to be clicked.
The rest of the result is based on information in the page, in the case below it comes from a page description. You should take notice that the description has been cut off and a " ... " placed at the end. This means that it is not only important to include a description, but you need to get the most important information in the first 150 characters so they show up for the searcher.
Notice the bolded words in the ad. These are words that match my search phrase "Cattle Ranches in Texas". Because these sites had these keywords in their content multiple times, this ad shows up at the top. There is more to it of course, but that is a big part of why this site was ranked so high.

Common Mistakes
One of the most common mistakes made when building a web page is forgetting to set the title. Most tools used to create web pages will create a page title of "untitled" or something similar and it is the developers job to change that title to something meaningful. Far to often this step is overlooked. Notice the results of my search stopped after 26.5 Million pages were found when I searched for "untitled". These pages may score high on this search, but would not do so well otherwise. It's an easy mistake to make if the developer isn't using a checklist to be sure they are finished.

It's all about the keywords
The only way to come up with an effective combination of keywords is to get into the head of the people searching for you. For example, a business that sells mechanics tools would have to decide whether customers are more likely to search for a wrench or a spanner? Knowing your audience is key.
We use a step-by-step approach to determine which keywords and phrases our audience is most likely to use in their searches. Once decided, we use these words and phrases throughout the rest of the process to build titles, names, descriptions and more. Every step of the project relies on this analysis from creating pages to writing ad copy.

We check each search engine submission individually to ensure the Site map submitted performs as expected. We will also create a robot page to control which robots are permitted to search the site. We will also create the appropriate entries to prevent certain directories from those searches when appropriate.

We use a wide variety of tools to be certain we getting optimum performance from your site. What's more, we also keep watching your site and either suggest changes or simply make them ourselves on you behalf.
- Google Analytics provides a wealth of information on the performance of your website. We will set up an Analytics account and add the necessary code to your pages as part of our service. We can help you get started with Analytics setting up reports and scheduled emails if you wish or you may decide to subscribe to our Marketing Service and we'll handle all of that for you and provide weekly status reports.
- Letter and Word Counters are used to ensure that Page Titles, Meta Descriptions and the like all fall within the guidelines provided by Google, Yahoo, Bing and MSN.
- Local Accounts and Directories can be a huge asset to any site if set up/submitted correctly and we will be happy to do this for you using the keywords, phrases and descriptions defined above..
- Site maps are created and submitted to Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing and Ask. We use the webmaster tools provided by these services to check for crawler errors at each site. If you opt for our Marketing Service we will monitor these submissions on a regular basis and include the results in our next weekly status report.
- Keyword Density tools will be used to show just how often keywords and phrases are used on a specific page. The results from this tool ensures that we have adequately spread the target keywords and phrases throughout the content of the web page.
